Geographical position

Lithuania is one of the states in the East ringing the Baltic Sea . Lithuania is the Centre of Europe (18 km from Vilnius ). To the north it borders on the Republic of Latvia (the length of the border 610 km) to the east and south it borders on Belarus (724 km), to the southwest - on Poland (110 km) and on district of Kaliningrad (303 km). The Territory of Lithuania is 65200 square km. The population is 3.40 million.

Lithuania is the land of thousands of beautiful lakes, many rivers; it is a place of vast planes and rolling hills. A number of national and regional parks were established to protect the beautiful nature of this green Land. 

Lithuania is also famous for its Baltic Sea cost with long beaches and wonderful dunes and resort towns as Palanga, Nida, Neringa, Preila. Palanga is considered to be the most popular Lithuanian resort at the Baltic seaside. It is famous for its Amber museum, Botanical Park and summer festivals. Nida, Neringa and Preila are very quite towns located at the Curonian Spit - long ridge of white sand dunes surrounded by the Baltic Sea

Diversity of the landscape and beauty of the nature is not the only thing that attract the tourists from all over the world.  Lithuania is also attractive for its wonderful historical cities, romantic castles and diverse architecture.

Little by little European styles reached the country and today across different Lithuanian cities and towns you can find Gothic and Renaissance masterpieces, pearls of Baroque and Classicism.

Vilnius

Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and one of the country's oldest cities. It stretches along both banks of the fast flowing Neris River , and is set among hills pine forests.

Vilnius is outstanding for its architectural diversity - churches, towers, and narrow streets reflect the greatest architectural styles of Europe . The Old town of Vilnius city is included into the World Heritage list.

The modern culture of Vilnius fully reflects the diversity of city life. Evenings of classical music and competitions are held at the Philharmonic Society Hall. Operas, ballets and plays are staged at the Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Youth Theatre, the Academic Drama Theatre. There are seven art galleries and a modern art centre where it is possible to get to know the works of Lithuanian artists and to purchase the work you like. The Lithuanian capital is famous for its commercial fairs and exhibitions.

Almost all hotels and a dormitory for young people are situated in the central part of the city. There are many restaurants and cafés where you can find a great variety of different foods, from Lithuanian to East European or North American cuisine.

There are plenty of shops and department stores selling high-quality goods from all over the world and open twenty-four hours a day.

There are several antique shops. Private clinics and beauty salons are rapidly expanding their activities.

The banks in Vilnius are concentrated in the Old Town . There are many currency exchange centres. One can obtain goods and services using credit cards and travel cheques.

Foreign embassies, business representations and agencies are also being established in the centre of the city.

Vilnius is the gateway to Lithuania and the Baltic States, being situated in an advantageous geographical location in Europe . The airport is within half an hour of the centre of the city. It has direct links with 18 cities and there is regular bus service to 7 countries.

Weather and climate: The local name for Lithuania , Lietuva, comes from the word lietus, meaning rain. Take this as a hint and bring an umbrella. The summers are warm, often hot, the winters downright freezing. From early June to late August, temperatures can reach the late 20Cs.
